The Visionary Event
As in the words of Shoshana Cardin, our first guest speaker of our Women’s Event, “This manifestation tonight is the dream,
the core of the Jewish people – that is to be a community.
You have proven that Howard County
is indeed a community for the 21st century.”
Through community we create a safe and secure environment for all of the Jewish people, no matter their background or level of Judaism. Through community we can work to keep our Jewish family here and around the world safe and secure.
On June 2, 2009 we came together as one community, to celebrate our incredible Visionaries who have shown by their actions they understand what it means to be a part of the Jewish community, here in Howard County and beyond. They have taken responsibility for something beyond themselves; the responsibility to reach out and protect all Jewish people no matter where they live, no matter whether they are affiliated and no matter their status. Our Volunteer Extraordinaire, Elliot Shefrin, was awarded the Sharon Stern Volunteer Award on June 2, 2009. This award, presented by the Federation along with Ed, Teddi and Sam Stern, was named for and in memory of Sharon Stern - Ed’s wife, Teddi and Sam’s mother, a friend to many.
This award honors Sharon’s spirit and sense of Tikun Olam. It asks each of us to follow her great heart in all that we choose to do for the Jewish people, our community our friends, our family.
This award is presented in her honor, to a volunteer that has worked selflessly for the Jewish people and for our community.
A volunteer that remembers what the Mishnah tells us - Every Jew is responsible for one another.
At the Visionary Event on June 2 we presented this award to OUR TREASURER FOR LIFE – Elliot Shefrin. read more

YOUNG JEWISH LEADERSHIP
Join this new group for young families, couples & singles.
An outreach group established to bring our next generation of community leaders together for social and cultural events.
Stay tuned for upcoming events!
This group was started for our community of young people, ages 25 to 45. There are students, professionals, Jewish leaders, singles, parents,Howard County residents, and Howard County alumnae concerned about – their future and the future of the Jewish people, meeting other young Jewish professionals, current issues, community philanthropy, volunteering for our community, and helping our global Jewish family.
The Red Tent Club
For hip, spirited & intrigued minds - kicked off in December of 2008, with world renowned speaker and author Lori Palatnik. This group was formed to help bring diverse women of the community together to learn and grow through the power of Judaism.
We learned about Great Jewish Women – Who We Are, Where We Are Going; Gossip, Lies & Lessons; The Kabbalah of Love; The Kabbalah of You – Understanding Yourself and Appreciating Others.

A commentary on our Jewish Family
Dr. Paul Valove

Paul Valove was brought up in a Conservative home by parents who had little interest in Judaism. Therefore, it was no surprise that as a young father of three daughters, he paid little attention to the halachah or Jewish laws behind the brit milah, the religious ritual which includes circumcision as a physical sign of the bond between the Jewish people and God. As an accomplished obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Valove had delivered many babies and had successfully performed thousands of circumcisions. . . . read more
